Transforming Lives in Northwest Syria: The Power of Clean Water and Sanitation

Water scarcity in Northwest Syria affects over 5.1 million people, including 2.1 million are in urgent need of water, sanitation, and hygiene assistance (source UNICEF – Humanitarian Action for Children 2024 – Syrian Arab Republic).

The lack of clean water leads to humanitarian crises, disease outbreaks, poisoning, and deaths due to dehydration, especially during heat waves exceeding 40°C. At Syrian Forum USA, we recognize the critical importance of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) projects. These initiatives provide safe drinking water, rehabilitate sanitation systems, and promote hygiene awareness, significantly reducing disease spread and enhancing overall health and living conditions.

Linking Water Projects to Sustainable Development: WASH projects are essential for sustainable development. Our efforts focus on improving water quality and ensuring sustainable availability by constructing and rehabilitating water stations and networks. By reducing waterborne diseases, these projects enhance life quality and promote local development. Lifesaving Efforts: Changing Lives Since our inception, Syrian Forum USA’s programs have worked tirelessly to improve WASH conditions in Northwest Syria.

In 2023, over 1.8 million people benefited from our initiatives, including lifesaving services in 312 camps, 19 health centers and over 200 schools. Ensuring Safe Drinking Water Our water projects involve daily water quality monitoring and infrastructure maintenance to ensure safe and sustainable access in communities and camps.

In 2023, our teams established 2 new water stations, rehabilitated 12 others, and built and maintained 12 water networks. We also provided reliable energy sources by connecting the one water station to the electrical grid and installing 7 solar power systems. Additionally, over 1,800 drinking water tanks were installed and rehabilitated in camps and schools, providing safe and clean water to individuals and families. Improving Sanitation Facilities Our sanitation projects connect camps to water and sewage networks, manage wastewater and solid waste, and maintain and expand sewage networks.

In 2023, we distributed 2,000 garbage containers, collected over 70K cubic meters of solid waste, and built and rehabilitated over 5,000 sanitation blocks in camps, including facilities for people with special needs. Additionally, 14 integrated sanitation systems were established, creating cleaner environments for the targeted areas in Northwest Syria.

Promoting Hygiene and Awareness Our hygiene and awareness projects educate beneficiaries on the importance of hygiene and maintaining a healthy environment through social media, posters, murals, and direct sessions. In 2023, we distributed over 116K hygiene kits and cleaning materials and conducted more than 157K awareness sessions in schools and camps, significantly impacting awareness levels regarding hygiene and health. Driving Sustainable Development Our WASH projects significantly improve life quality and promote sustainable development by providing clean water and sanitation, enabling residents to meet their basic needs, enhancing their health, and reducing disease spread.

Syrian Forum USA’s specialized programs and expert teams exemplify impactful developmental efforts that improve lives and environments. Continued development of these projects is essential for sustainable water supplies and public health in the region, improving quality of life for current and future generations. Stay tuned for more updates on our life-changing projects and learn how you can support our mission to bring clean water and improved sanitation to those in need.
